Bene Gesserit sister, concubine to Duke Leto, and mother to Paul and Alia.
The Bene Gesserit trained Jessica from girlhood and placed her as concubine to Duke Leto Atreides. It was one more move in the Sisterhood's long breeding scheme. Her orders were plain. She was to bear only daughters, so a carefully arranged genetic cross could close out a generation later. She loved Leto, and that love broke the order. She gave him a son instead. Paul arrived a full generation ahead of the Sisterhood's timetable, and set loose consequences they never saw coming. House Atreides fell not long after. Among the Fremen, Jessica underwent the Water of Life, a ritual that could easily have killed her. Instead it made her a Reverend Mother, carrying the inherited memory of countless women before her. She was pregnant with Alia at the time, and the same change reached her daughter in the womb. Her counsel, her discipline, and her sharp political sense drove much of Paul's rise. Few figures worked so much history from behind a throne that was never their own.
