Princess Irulan was the eldest daughter of Emperor Shaddam IV, and a Bene Gesserit-trained historian in her own right. She became Paul Atreides' wife in name only, part of the political settlement that secured his claim to the Golden Lion Throne. It was a marriage of state. Paul's genuine devotion stayed with Chani. What she had instead was the record. She was a trained historian and a genuinely good writer, and she set about documenting the man who had taken her father's throne and left her a wife in name only. The accounts she produced shaped how most of the Imperium understood Muad'Dib, which meant the story of the Atreides reached posterity through the pen of the woman with the least reason to be generous about it. She was, by turns, admiring, propagandist, and quietly furious, sometimes in the same sentence.
