Otheym was a trusted Fremen Fedaykin who served Paul faithfully through the desert years and the jihad that followed. He embodied the fierce loyalty that bound Paul's original desert companions to him long after his rise to Emperor. In the events chronicled in Dune Messiah, Otheym contracted a debilitating disease the Tleilaxu had engineered on purpose, part of the wider conspiracy against Paul's rule. His suffering was meant as one more pressure point against the Emperor he served. His health was failing fast. Even so, Otheym still passed Paul crucial information through his Tleilaxu-conditioned dwarf, Bijaz, whose coded riddles helped expose key parts of the plot. He endured suffering and betrayal from his own body to help uncover the conspiracy. It showed how deep the devotion of Paul's original Fremen companions ran, even as his empire grew more perilous.
