Gurney Halleck came up scarred in the Harkonnen slave pits and turned loyal Atreides retainer. He served as Duke Leto's Warmaster, training young Paul in swordsmanship and combat discipline. He nurtured the boy's love of music through the baliset besides. After House Atreides fell, Gurney fell in with smugglers working the fringes of Harkonnen control. He used his skills to survive and nursed a burning desire for vengeance the whole time. His reunion with Paul among the Fremen came after a tense, nearly fatal misunderstanding involving Lady Jessica. It restored him to Atreides service. There his blunt honesty and battle-hardened wisdom made him an indispensable advisor through Paul's rise to power. Gurney was equally at home reciting poetry or leading a charge. That blend of brutal combat skill and real artistic feeling made him one of the most memorable and loyal figures in the whole Atreides household.
