Fremen warrior and Paul Atreides's concubine.
Chani was the daughter of Liet-Kynes, the Imperial Planetologist who secretly led the Fremen. She grew up carrying his ecological dream for Arrakis and the hard desert skills that made her people so dangerous. When Paul arrived among the Fremen, she became his guide. She taught him sietch life and the ways of the open sand. What started as instruction deepened into a devotion neither of them ever let go of, political marriage to Princess Irulan or not. She fought as a Fedaykin in her own right and rode with his forces as the desert turned on the Harkonnens. When the Imperium was settled she was denied the title of wife, which went to Shaddam's daughter as part of the bargain for the throne. Everyone involved understood which of the two women Paul had actually chosen, including, in time, the one who held the title.
