The Imperium sent Pardot Kynes to Arrakis as its official Planetologist, a man expected to catalog a wasteland and file his reports. He fell in love instead, with the planet and with the Fremen who had learned to survive it. Cataloging gave way to a private, audacious plan: turn the desert itself into a water-rich world, a project no single lifetime could finish. Centuries of patient, secret labor stood between the dream and its completion, so Kynes recruited the one people positioned to carry it forward. His closeness with the Fremen let him fold their survival culture into an actual scientific program, a concrete goal beyond mere endurance. When he died, the dream passed to his son Liet-Kynes, and through Liet it spread across Fremen society as near-religious conviction, shaping Paul Atreides' own understanding of the planet long before Paul ever set foot on it.
